On Friday May 10, 2019 the University Preparatory’s 276 Battalion went to Riverside Prep to take part in the 2019 Pass in Review.

The Pass in Review is an annual military event that showcases the discipline and accomplishments of all of the cadets that belong to the 18th brigade, which is the name for all of the local Cadet Corp groups. At this event, each school goes through their marches and formation to not only represent their school, but to also represent their region in front of Colonel Edinboro, the Executive Officer of the CACC program and a Representative for Congressman Paul Cook. This event is a big deal for the Cadet Corp group.

When Junior Jonathan Leung was asked about the significance of the Pass in Review event he said “This event is a big deal because our Battalion has to stand and march for around 2 hours in front of basically the whole High Desert.”

Luckily for Leung, the Pass in Review was cut short because on the same day, it had rained heavily, making the whole event last an hour and a half instead of 2. In result, the 276 Battalion, instead of marching on the field of Riverside Prep, they all huddled into Riverside Prep’s Gymnasium and listened to Paul Cook’s Representative and Colonel Edinboro give speeches and recognize individuals for their achievement. One of the people being recognized was University Prep’s own Junior, Karina Gilbert.

Katrina Gilbert was recognized for being promoted from a Captain to a Major. This makes Katrina Gilbert University Prep’s first cadet to reach this status.

When Gilbert was asked how it felt to be such a high ranking cadet, she replied excitedly with, “It feels really good, like really good.”

To reach this status, Gilbert had to pass a 50 question exam, pass the California Fitness Test, and impress the commanding officers with a personal interview. With this new achievement, Gilbert now has a lot more responsibility.

When being asked about taking on these responsibilities, Gilbert stated, “I’m currently in charge of two units, but now that I am a major, I can potentially be put in charge of six units.” This means that out of the eight local Cadet Corp programs, Katrina Gilbert might be leading six of those eight groups.

Even though this may be overwhelming for some, Katrina Gilbert seems to be made to take on this type of responsibility saying, “The only big deal is the paperwork, and that’s not too bad because I’ve basically been doing paper work since 7th grade.”

It is safe to say that this year, the 276 Battalion has done an exceptional job representing University Preparatory as school.
