On Thursday, February 21, the middle school Jags faced off against the Riverside prep Silver Knights at their home court.

The game started off well with our team winning the tipped ball to 8th grader Andrea Jamison. After Andrea Jamison gained control of the ball, he saw an opening in the defense and chose to attack it. Unfortunately, this risky decision cost Andreas as Isaac Williams (#1) from the other team stole the ball and got an uncontested layup to open the game up 2-0. A few plays after this, #22, Brian Shabazz, began to get put back after put back to start an 8-0 run. Number 5, eighth grader Bishoy Soliman, then was fouled and scored the Jags first two points at the free throw line. After this, the Knights then stunned the Jags with another 7-0 which ended the first half 17-2.

When Mr. Garcia was asked what the game plan was at half time, he answered with, “I just told them that we needed to stay positive, constantly move to get open and to communicate on both ends of the court.” After this, Mr. Garcia was asked if he had the team to do anything differently in the second half, to this he responded with, “Yes, I told them to play more aggressive on defense, trap the ball handler as we force him left, and be more aggressive on rebounds”.

At the start of the second half, you could tell that the Jags still had a lot of fight in them. After a couple of scoring attempts by both teams, Bishoy Soliman obtained a steal and passed the ball up the court to Gilbert Betancourt (#9) who made a tough layup to get the Jags up to 4 points. After this, the other team answered back with two three’s of their own from #2 and #12. After this, Andrea drove in with ferocity and then hit a tough fade away jumper to score his first points of the game.

Sadly this wasn’t enough because the other team kept getting put back after put back. In a last stitch effort, Andrew Moreno scored 4 points towards then end of the second half. Lastly Destiny Njoku (#11) scored a free throw to end the game making the final score 34-11.

When Rashad the team manager was asked what he thought of the basketball game he replied with “This was a very tough game. I mean, we lost by a lot but I’m glad that we fought with heart to the end.” After that statement, Rashad was asked what the team’s goals are now having missed the playoffs and he answered with, “At this point, it’s important that we have fun and make sure that we secure this last win next Tuesday”.
