University Preparatory’s Baseball team took their first loss, 6-1, against Serrano High School on Tuesday February 26,2019 at Serrano’s home field.

Junior Jasiah Martinez (#21) started the game off with a line drive hit to Serrano’s right fielder who caught the ball in clear skies. Second batter was Gustavo Meza (#25) who struck out along with the third batter, Rodolfo Mejia (#11) who also struck out. Up came Serrano to bat and their first batter struck out giving Serrano one out. Junior Joey Iorio (#1) walked and was at first base. Third player also got got walked which left Iorio on second base. Up came the 4th batter who lined out to Meza (#25) who caught the ball and threw to first which caused a double play and got Serrano out in the first inning.

Second inning started to get tough for University Prep as the 5th batter for Serrano was up to hit and sent the ball to deep center and Junior Cecil Foster (#23) couldn’t quite get his hands on the ball which led the 5th batter to reach 3rd base.

By the 5th inning, Serrano with a lead score of 2 and University Prep still with no runs until Freshman Alexis Martin (#2) batted first and got walked, up next came Meza (#25) hit the ball to second base, which went through to the short stop who caught it and threw it to first but Meza got on base safe. Third batter Mejia hit the ball and got on first and brought Meza into 3rd. Travis Madden (#3), fourth batter, hit towards center field and Meza came in and scored which gave University Prep their one run. By the 6th inning, Serrano scored 2 which put them with a 6-1 lead and gave University Preparatory their first loss.

After the game, Adam Gutierrez (#6) was interviewed and explained how he felt after his loss. “It was definitely the toughest team we have played so far but, we put in the work that we were supposed to do and we could have changed a couple of things but the next game will be it for us.”
