On February 2, 2018, a 45 year old Mexican man, who remains anonymous, was detained. The man was taken into custody by border patrol. The border patrol agents in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas detained this man for illegally crossing the border. The man was held for 72 hours, then turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement. After, the man was handed over to the Roma Police Department.

The man requested medical attention from the police of Roma, so they transported him to the Mission Regional Medical Center. The man was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver and congestive heart failure. The man was hospitalized twice while held captive. The second time he was hospitalized was at the Mcalllen Medical Center. He spent two weeks in the intensive care unit, where he eventually died on February 18, 2019. The death cause is still unknown.

When sophomore Jaimee Chan, was asked what her thoughts on the subject were she said,”I think that it’s a terrible thing that this is happening. So many of these deaths could be avoided, but the border patrol officers don’t treat these people as people. They let them starve and dehydrate to the point where they die. I think that it has nothing to do with the president or the wall because it has been happening for so many years, even before Trump. All Trump does is announce it more than other presidents have because of his hate towards immigrants. Trump is making the situation worse by spreading his hate.”

Junior, Yulemi Solis was also asked her opinions on the matter and she replied with,”I think that it’s wrong and it shouldn’t be happening in this world. It’s common sense and for people to treat others as if they’re not human is wrong because we’re all people. I think this is happening because not a lot of people see what others go through in their everyday life. We know people from across the border are trying to come over here to make a better living and I guess they don’t understand that because they had their things handed to them. Unlike these people some of them have to work very hard to get what they want. The person I think that’s very involved in it is Donald Trump because he’s the one who is trying to build the wall against the people that are trying to come and make a better living. Putting up a wall would make this matter worse for the people across the border because it takes away their opportunity to make a better life.”
