On January 22 of 2019, in the state of Connecticut, four students became ill after vaping in a school bathroom and were taken to the hospital. Luckily, there were no serious injuries and the students were able to return to school the next day.

Vaping has been a serious issue in high schools recently. Studies show that between 2011 and 2015, the 2016 National Youth Tobacco survey noted that 1.7 million students in high school have had issues with vaping in the past 20 days and for middle school it was 500,00 students. This could be a major issue with high schools because it can affect the students knowledge and their own mental health. There have been students who have been vaping since they were only 11 or 12 years old and a high school senior says that it got to the point where he could neither taste or smell anything.

Due to the vaping issues and the number of students that are in high school who are now beginning to vape in bathrooms, there have been signs posted in the bathrooms that say something along the lines of “Strangely enough, some students come in here to put crap into their bodies.”

Stephanie Nguyen, a junior in High School, gave her input on what she thought about the students in Connecticut, “I believe that it’s their fault and that they shouldn’t have been doing that at school and its disgusting, especially because there is so much bacteria in the bathroom,” She continues, “I think that vaping is not cool at all, and it does not make you look cool either and the only reason teens probably do it is because of their friends.”

High school senior Michael Lewis commented on vaping and what makes teens want to smoke, “I’m not into it at all and I think teens just do it because others do. Curiosity and peer pressure also has a big impact on teens.”

Many teens out in the world do not know the effect vaping can have on a persons health. Schools and students can start to take that situation more seriously and perhaps decrease the rate of teens vaping over the course of years in the future.
